arrest. good evening, i'll kelly swoope. he was 70 years old and loved his community. his murder sparked outrage but as fall comes the emotions have turned to action. we have more on the investigation and how the community is rallying and waiting for an arrest. >> reporter: kelly, the police say the murder of milton hill is still an investigation, beyond that they're not saying much. but this week his east baltimore xunt is. while police continuing -- community is. while police is looking for leads, the church is taking the lead in the community. >> for yesterday, it was battle zone. but today it's a playground. >> reporter: pastor carter led a group of nearly 50 volunteers yesterday to clean up this playground. the weeds are gone, the cement got a fresh coat of paint. it invites kids' play. no longer the criminal element that may have so unceremoniously

taken hill's life. >> passing of milton hill really stimulated us to understand that in front of our church is good and then we have to go to the corners, we have to go to the side streets, and just continue to create an attitude of safety. >> reporter: work that goes beyond a day's work. because just one day later, eastern district major melvin russell had to take down a pair of shoes hanging from a tree. a common signature by the criminal element that means trouble will be back again. police warn there will always be push back when a troubled corner like this one is cleaned up. the community just needs to push harder. >> yesterday they cleaned it up and i'm glad. >> you hope it lasts a while. >> yeah, i hope so.

like i said, like i said, it's for all the children because he got to grow up, a whole lot of kids got to grow up. >> reporter: she hopes the park lasts, important for her grandchildren, important for the community, a community now avenging a murder by taking back one corner at a time. >> we're convinced we're going to prevail because in spite of the criminal element, i still believe people want to do what's right. i still believe that. and i think we'll see that with this park and all that will come forth. >> reporter: now the ark church is also looking for donations to replace the ageing equipment in that playground as well. meanwhile, everyone in that fabhood continues to wait on -- neighborhood continues to wait on wood from the police about word of milton's murderer. should a man who beat a dog so severely that the animal died be allowed to work with animals? the maryland spca says now.

according to authorities, derrick chambers beat a dog to death after it bit him and his wife. an anonymous caller said he saw chambers hitting the dog, putting him in a plastic dog, and putting him in the back of a truck. instead of jail time, he's being allowed to do community service at the maryland spca. >> we would never recommend that a child molester do community service with the boy scouts and we should never recommend that a person charged with animal abuse do community service with animals. >> reporter: griffin says the sentence is simply outrageous, especially since no one asked the spca first. . a white supremacist who goes by the name hitler pleads guilty to several counts in the beating

of a fisherman in the park. 29-year-old calvin locklear pleaded guilty on first degree assault. he agreed to a 31-year prison term. sergeant john burner the third was waiting for test results for a respiratory illness. his 32-year-old son died thursday, three days after visiting a medical facility in kuwait. his son was told he couldn't have a blood test because laboratory equipment had been shipped out as part of a deployment. he was given medication, burner says it was told it may be months before he receives an autopsy report. a columbia man accused ever killing his wife and setting her apartment on fire is now in custody. police arrested damon white yesterday after being released

from the hospital. he is charged with murder and arson in the death of thelma wynn. white was injured during the incident and had been hospitalized under police guard. he was denied bail. department of defense announced the death of four sailors in this week's helicopter crash in afghanistan and one of them is from maryland. he was assigned to a west coast based seal team. . big storms out there earlier tonight, especially hugging the maryland/pennsylvania line. now we're seeing skies begin to clear out. still a little bit of active weather down on the eastern shore. let's zoom in here with maryland's most powerful radar and you can see that last cluster of lightning beginning to move out of queen ann and a little tighter perspective and you can see exactly where the

active weather is now, south into greensboro and north of the denton area. if you're in denton watching, look north, you can see the lightning in your northern sky. other than that things clearing up but first day of fall feeling anything but. talking about mid to upper 80s as we chk out the hour by -- check out the hour by hour forecast. it's muggy night out there right now. when the hot streak of fall comes to an end, straight ahead. a harford county community has been mourning the death after popular high school student since last week and today they said their final goodbyes. jeff hager has more. >> reporter: with some of his fallston high teammates as pal bearers, hundreds of family, friends, and fellow students went up the hill to his final

resting place. impressive in place, joey d'entremont's funeral was nothing less. >> he was a family person, he loved everyone, whether you were friends with him or not, you can't not like joey. >> reporter: it's a sentiment echoed but his coach wagner. >> on and off the field, he would encourage kids to stick with it and it will get better. >> reporter: during the funeral service a song joey composed himself brought tears to many. >>. [ singing ]. . >> reporter: and joey's grandfather, florida minister sherman stevens, tried to put his death into perspective. >> there are many things in this world worse than having a son in heaven.

>> reporter: with hundreds of teens and their parents seated before them, stevens tried to bring his message of faith to them on their own level. >> some of the teenagers think, well, what does this old guy now? we're so many different generations up the road that he doesn't understand what we're going through today. can i tell you something? these old legs used to run down the ballfield. >> reporter: it was a moment of light heartedness on a day when many hearts became heavy with the finality of what happened to the 14-year-old. >> honestly, i think he would rather us be smiling than crying. it's hard when you care about somebody so much. and they go away forever. . tragedy for a family. luke and his brother were playing golf when luke was accidentally hit in the eye at close range with a ball. the impact caused the iris to rip from the white part of the eye. doctors worked to restore luke's sight. >> it was probably a the most serious injury because of not only the immediate complications that can occur but life long risk for things like glaucoma and cata racks. >> doctors say he'll be at a higher risk for glaucoma. the salmonella outbreak caused by tainted eggs was the subject of a hearing today. the congress heard from those sickened by the eggs and representatives from the iowa farms involved. >> we view that the cause of contamination to be the meat and

bone meal that was an ingredient in our food. >> the fda is asking the senate to pass a new food safety act that will give the administration more oversight power. possible insect contamination is forcing a company to recall millions of containers of a very popular infant formula. abbot laboratories says less than 5 million similac powder formulas may contain small beetles or lave. you can call them at 1-800-986-8850 or you can log on to abc2news.com for a link to the similac recall site. there you can enter the lot number on the container to determine if it is subject to the recall. well, nowadays there are more choices when it comes to your health insurance. many employers let you pick between a traditional plan and a health savings account but both are not created equal. so which one is right for you?

say as minors eddie long coerced them into sexual acts and relationships. he showered them with expensive gifts. long denies the allegations and says for now his congregation seems to have his back. >> i don't believe the allegations at all. >> we love our bishop. and god is good. >> a third man who was also a teenager at the time of an alleged relationship has filed a lawsuit against bishop long. the governor of wisconsin says a plans to remove a district attorney accused of sending inappropriate text messages to several woman. kim claks is refusing calls to resign but has sought psychiatric help. three women came forward. one of them says she started getting the texts when he prosecutored her sexual violence case. another says she was harassed after she asked him to help her get a pardon for a previous

conviction. a parking ticket can put you in a bad mood quick so one man is trying to get people to relax. tickets are issued with envelopes featuring yoga poses. it's all part of a public works project but drivers say it all seems silly. >> i think it's a waste of an envelope because if i get a ticket, i'm not looking at the poses to relax, believe me. >> absolutely absurd. >> they don't cost more money than the old envelopes. when should you say no to a health savings account and word that apple is ready to roll out a smaller, cheaper ipad. and aims to stop texting in movie theatres. >> reporter: it's a start of health insurance reenrolment season at greater baltimore businesses and the hottest thing these days are high deductible

plans coupled with an hsa or health savings account. these plans are much cheaper than traditional plans. you pay for your medical care out of a tax free account until you hit a certain deductible. but there are times when you should say no to the plans. you may want to stick with a traditional health plan if you anticipate big medical bills next year, also if you have any illness that requires frequent doctors visits. hsa are best for younger and healthier people. apple's blogs are abuzz with rumors that steve jobs is getting ready to unveil a smaller, cheaper ipad. it could be on the market by the beginning of the new year. the current ipad is a 9.7 inch screen. the smaller one would have a 7 inch screen. it would have a camera and face time. apple's popular video conferencing feature. and remember when the most annoying thing in a movie theatre was ringing cell phones? not any more. now the most annoying thing to

we're going the other way. in fact next two days, kelly, pushing 90 tomorrow, into the 90s friday, don't feel like fall until next week. >> okay. >> but it is coming. >> not far away. >> but don't break out the hot sider yet. take a look outside now and a couple of storms earlier generally tracking north of the city. we have a clear sky and nearly full moon right now. not bad. we've got a balmy night, too. have you to have the ac on, first night of fall, doesn't matter. 75 degrees, humidity 74%, it is muggy out. and as we take a look at some storms as they rolled in the area today, our weather net county, we go from blue skies at 2:00, 3, 4:00 there's our first round of thunderstorms that rolled through out of the west and toward sunset you can see a decent storm top there up towards the pennsylvania line. so that was our story throughout the afternoon. neighborhood by neighborhood, into the 90s today, arnold at 94, fallston at 90, westminster

92. it was warm. awfully warm. let's show you what some of that hot humid air led to. bottom line is showers and storms as we put maryland's most powerful radar into motion. the last part of maryland clearing out towards greensboro. you can see storms clearing the area and as you watch down here toward denton and queen ann you have to look to your north and northeast in the sky to see remaining lightning. looking good, clearing up. temperaturewise we've cooled off some but it's muggy. a muggy 77. not exactly what we had in mind for our first night of fall. 78 in fredericks now. down south, look at culpeper, almost 100 today down into virginia for the last day of summer. our radar shows clearing out, weather out in far western maryland is not going to make it in here in any significant way, you can see the line of showers and storms they're tracking along a boundary north and west

of baltimore. this boundary is not going to come through. i think it's going to retreat northward and that's going to allow the hot humid air to keep flowing in out of the south and keep temperatures way above average by that 15, 20 degrees. our forecast model clear and sunny tomorrow and into the day on friday, another clear sunny day with a south wind and no fresh cool air coming in. it's a summer scenario for the first couple of days after fall. what can i say? sometimes that happens. tomorrow, first full day of fall, and mostly sunny. but not fall-like at 88 degrees. tomorrow night, down to 67 or so with a few clouds. when can we expect more autumn-like weather? not really until sunday. that's our big abc 2 extreme makeover sunday night but the bottom line is we have a couple of hot days to get through and then two cool fronts over the weekend. next week looks rainier and cooler. so fall is coming. well, if you think baltimore

area roads are bad, a new survey, national survey, backs you up. trip net.org claims baltimore has the tenth worst roads in the entire nation costing local drivers an extra $600 each year on ware and tear on their -- wear and tear on their vehicles. city officials don't agree. >> we have put a lot of effort into maintaining our roadways. it's the one thing we focused on over the last four years with our operation orange cone program and it's one thing we take seriously. >> the city says it's still on target to complete projects scheduled for this year. as we're talking earlier, texting can be distracting, addictive, annoying, disruptive, but apparently it can be very, very profitable. 13-year-old breanna hendrickson of brooklyn, new york, one the
